Save time with online grocery shopping

Online grocery shopping is growing at an outstanding pace thanks to technology. More working women (and men) are using online grocery shopping as a way to save time in their busy week. Instead of going to the grocery store, just think how saving one hour or more in a week adds up – that is more than 50 hours in a year for other things in life.

As a working mother, I have used grocery shopping online to streamline my planning ahead of traveling for work, and also during vacation to organize provisions to be delivered so that the fridge is stocked on arrival.

Personally, I have tried Amazon Prime (available in several countries), Instacart and FreshDirect (in Greater New York area; 60 day free delivery offer) for online groceries. Many have same-day deliveries depending on demand volumes. For bulk pantry items, working mothers I know use Amazon Prime and Walmart. The Amazon Prime Membership offers additional benefits such as unlimited free two-day shipping and access to thousands of movies and TV episodes for the family to watch.

Benefits and concerns of online grocery shopping

In addition to saving time, online shopping can help to manage a budget, provide the choice to picking a delivery time around your busy schedule, and create a shopping list that you can use again.

What are some of the dislikes or perceived risks of online grocery shopping? Perhaps the number one reason for not using the service is consumers’ preference to check the freshness and their pick own fruit and produce. Also, some items on your list may not be in stock, so you may need to substitute items or lighten your cart.

Rapid growth of online grocery shopping

The Food Industry Association and Nielsen predicts that by 2022, US consumers could be spending $100B dollars a year on online grocery, up from $28.7B in 2019. While this number may seem large, online grocery shopping is still small relative to the estimated $800B in combined online and in-store spending for food and beverage at home that consumers will spend by 2025.

Who is using online grocery shopping?

By 2024, 70% of US consumers are expected to do some level of grocery shopping online. Not surprisingly Millennials are taking the lead in the adoption of online grocery shopping with 61% of Millennials using this regularly compared with 55% of Generation X, 41% of Baby Boomers and 39% of Greatest Generation.
