March Forward: Celebrating International Women’s Day 2025

International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025 ignites our passion and commitment with the inspiring theme “March Forward: For ALL Women and Girls.” This year, we are called not just to reflect, but to act—to unlock the doors to equal rights and opportunities for women and girls around the world. As we commemorate the 30th anniversary of the United Nations’ Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, we recognize it as a pivotal moment in the movement for gender equality.

The Beijing Declaration was a bold step towards addressing the systemic inequalities that hinder women’s full participation in society. It set the stage for our ongoing journey, demanding that we celebrate our achievements while confronting the challenges that persist. The current theme serves as a powerful reminder that empowering the next generation—especially young women and adolescent girls—is crucial, as they are the catalysts of meaningful change.

UN Women's 2025 report on Women’s Rights in Review 30 Years After Beijing, highlights that:

  1. Laws: Between 1995 and 2024, 1,531 legal reforms around the world sought to advance gender equality. But women still have only 64% of the legal rights of men.

  2. Representation: The proportion of women in parliaments has more than doubled since 1995. But, today, almost 3/4 of parliamentarians are still men.

  3. Work: Gender gaps in work have stagnated for decades. Globally, among people aged 25–54, 63% of women are in the labour force compared to 92% of men. Women still do 2.5X more unpaid care work than men. On the positive side, since 1995, the number of countries with laws prohibiting gender-based discrimination in employment has increased from 58 to 162.

We must acknowledge the persistent challenges that continue to affect our society. These include gender-based violence, the barriers that limit access to education and economic empowerment, workplace bias and discrimination, and the enduring pay gap. It is important to understand that these issues are not isolated; rather, they are interconnected struggles in the broader fight against systemic inequality.

We should strive to honor the diverse experiences of women, taking into account how factors such as race, class, and sexual orientation influence our realities. Our focus must be on advancing progress rather than regressing. It is concerning to observe that some governments and organizations may be taking steps that undermine efforts in diversity, equity, and inclusion, and it is essential that we work together to uphold and build upon the gains we have achieved.

To contribute to positive change, consider these three impactful strategies:

1. Support Local Initiatives: Get involved with organizations that advocate for women’s rights and gender equality. Your time, donation and energy can drive meaningful progress.

2. Choose Inclusive Brands: Buy from businesses that prioritize gender equality, diversity, and inclusion, encouraging others to adopt similar values.

3. Share Your Expertise: Offer your talent and skills to work with employers committed to fostering diversity and equality in their workplaces, helping create a more equitable environment for all.

By taking these steps, you can make a valuable impact in promoting a fair and inclusive society.
